The role:

As an IMCA, you will be supporting a wide range of vulnerable adults often with profound and multiple needs to ensure their voices are heard, and their feelings represented.

The position is for a part-time role, working on a case-by-case basis between Monday to Friday, with client meetings taking place in-person (COVID-19 regulations permitting) across your area as required, and any administrative work able to be completed at home.

The responsibilities:

  • To visit clients in their care home or hospital setting and talk to them (as far as is possible) to find out their views and wishes regarding their placement and care and to ensure that the vulnerable person has been supported and involved in any decisions
  • Find out as much relevant information as possible for the decision-making process
  • To meet with and establish the views of professionals, paid workers and anybody else who can give information about the wishes and feelings, beliefs, or values of the vulnerable person
  • Examine relevant health and social care records
  • To create reports and enter records of your visits onto our database
  • To report back to your supervising IMCA if there are any problems or concerns
  • Where it is not possible to resolve concerns, an IMCA may be required to formally challenge the decision-making process.

The requirements:

  • To be literate, computer literate (Microsoft Office), and be able to write and upload reports
  • A clean driving license, access to your own car, and car insurance for business use
  • As this is a self-employed role, you will be expected to invoice us for work completed at the end of every month
  • Experience of IMCA work will be valuable, along with a good working knowledge of public and voluntary organisations. I.e., working knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act 2005, including the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, the Mental Health Act 1983 (as amended, most recently by the Mental Health Act 2007), strong experience working with vulnerable adults who are affected by significant health and social care issues and unable to speak up for themselves.

The skills and qualities we need you to have:

  • An objective, sensitive and non-judgemental approach with respect for confidentiality
  • To be able to communicate effectively with other professionals such as social care workers and care provider
  • The ability to use creative methods of communication with people who lack capacity to ensure you represent their views, wishes and feelings, or identifying their preferences by reviewing their files, or talking to those that know them if you are not able to obtain their views directly

Our ideal candidate will have experience in, or a good understanding of, advocacy, information and advice or similar role - ideally in a health, social care or voluntary setting and will have experience of working with vulnerable adults. A certification in Advocacy would be advantageous.

What we offer:

  • Competitive pay, plus travel and mileage
  • Ongoing paid remote training, supervision, and support from our amazing team
  • Paid team meetings held remotely via Zoom
  • An immediate start, or as soon as you can begin working with us
  • A flexible, part-time role on a 5-10-hours per week basis, so you can manage your appointments to fit in with your other work and life commitments
